Will the Anti Cigarette Law in the UK Take Bingo Enthusiasts On to the Net?
A lot has been written in the press recently about the bingo industry being hurt as a consequence of the smoking ban in Britain. Conditions have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive aid to help keep the industry alive. However can the net version of this quintessential game provide a reprieve, or will it in no way compare to its real life equivalent?
Bingo is an enduring game usually played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game recently had seen a recent return in acceptance with younger members of society deciding to go to the bingo halls instead of the clubs on a Saturday night. This is all about to be reversed with the legislating of the smoking ban throughout UK.
Players will no longer be able to puff on cigarettes whilst dabbing numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public place will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favored areas where folks like to puff on cigarettes.
The results of the smoking ban can already be seen in Scotland where cigarettes are already barred in the bingo halls. Profits have plunged and the industry is literally struggling for its life. But where did the players go? Surely they haven't abandoned this established game?
The answer is on the internet. Players realise that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a beverage and cig and still enjoy huge prizes. This is a recent development and has happened almost perfectly with the ban on smoking.
Of course gambling on on the net is unlikely to replace the communal portion of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the governing edicts have left a number of bingo players with little choice.
